2011 Honda Odyssey MyCarlady Test Drive review

MyCarlady loves to test drive the newest 2011 models  and the Honda Odyssey is the latest to go on-sale, hitting the Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada dealerships in the past week.  As a professional car consultant and advisor to my clients, (like an auto broker but better), I must know about all the latest improvements, technology and even the negatives that cost-cutting can do to an existing model during changeover.

The new Odyssey option package line-up includes the EX, Touring, Touring Elite.

The 2011 Honda Odyssey looks longer, lower and sleeker than it’s predecessor, but in reality the eye can be fooled by the missing roof rails and narrower windows contoured sharply up along the body. You will see what I mean in the YouTube MYCARLADYTESTDRIVES  video where I actually line up and old 2009 Honda Odyssey to the 2011. It looks A LOT like the Toyota Sienna from the outside, but inside the van has luxury and space galore. The dash is wide and flat across, with the signature shifter on the dash. The gauges are simple and back-lighting is subtle. The radio, navigation,back-up system required some reading and leaning as the ergonomics for the driver make the large, round button a bit of a stretch when driving.  The deep well cuts outside light reflection onto the screen and the back-up coordinates stay straight to aid in backing into a space.  The laminate finish is a nice alternative to the typical fake wood or polished aluminum, warming the interior feel. Maneuvering into, out of and around the inside of the van is easy with a removable middle seat in the second row, wider variances between the rows and the door and better springs when folding, lifting and moving the seats for access. The split third row actually folds and tumbles easily, and lifting it out isn’t back-wrenching, a marked improvement from previous years. The drive is every bit a Honda; solid and self-assured on the road, with a wide stance that grabs the asphalt and corners with no body roll or rear end slip. (Traction control is standard)  The minivan was never one I tested for speed, but responsiveness is crucial in tight situations, and that the new Odyssey does with a light amount of pedal pressure.  Forget the donuts and figure eights with one finger, the Honda has variable power assist for easy parking at low speeds. The  wind and road noise is virtually undetectable at 50-70 mph, and I doubt any of us would notice if it the noise was there, between the radio, entertainment system and bickering of a van full of kids. Trust me when I say it is as QUIET as a Lexus, with more room. Warranty: 36,000 miles/36mos and 5yr/60k mile powertrain  MPG: 21/26 PROS: I liked everything about this van from a mom, professional woman, car buyer’s perspective. CONS:  Exterior color selection is flat and uninspiring not making a case for minivans as cool. AND THE PRICE… Even the most loyal Honda owners have to be taken aback at a $45k sticker, no incentives or loyalty offers and a lease payment over $600.00 a month. Perhaps the grandparents will consider this for their next luxury sed-van, but I’m not sure what family can afford this ride, even in it’s most entry level.
