Auto Registration FINES

DMV to register her new car as part of my service and did I know what the FINE was for being caught without your motor vehicle registration in the car? To which I said “NO” and she informed me that while she had proof of insurance, and the plates on her new car were obviously up to date, the fact that the police officer was there to investigate an accident which WAS NOT HER FAULT, didn’t matter. The officer gave her a TICKET with a FINE of $385.00. Now, she can get this waived if she produces a copy of the “lost” registration, however, to do so means schlepping to DMV with a photocopy of the actual license plate off her car, proof of insurance and driver’s license. She will then have to wait in line for at least 20 minutes to pay $20.00 for the photo-copy. After which she may be able to mail in the proof or she may have to appear at the court house. WHAT A PAIN! all over a missing auto registration that should and probably was at one time, in the glovebox of the car along with the insurance card (and Kleenex, napkins or other Mom stuff). Bear in mind, this can all be avoided if you take a copy of your registration and place it in your vault, car file, or someplace safe, along with an up-to-date copy of your auto insurance card, so that in the future, you can avoid the hassle or a trip to DMV, and possible fine.
