Happy Earth Day!  The day everyone watching the latest  CHRYSLER incarnation (a new subsidary) PEAPOD MOBILITY had been waiting for. For what?  We hear it can be started with your iPhone. Cool. We still don’t know if it has air conditioning as an option.  I called a few weeks back, and still haven’t heard from anyone at Arnell headquarters in NYC. GEM and CHRSYLER dealers want to know who is selling and servicing this baby. I’m curious about the warranty and air-conditioning, rather important in a state that spends eight months over 70 degrees. Apparently, you can order the PEAPOD for a mere $12,500.00, and the GEM-built car will arrive sometime this fall. But the real question about the PEAPOD is “will the American consumer buy it?”  At 25mph. it has limited curb appeal. Given that we do most of our commuting at that speed, not far from our homes and typically by ourselves or with one other person, are we ready to alter our driving behavior so drastically as to have a golf-cart for village gathering and a second ride for more extensive drives?  For the urbanized,  owning a PEAPOD may make great sense. When I lived in Manhattan, I loathed the subway and bus, and found the taxi expensive, so walking or biking was my mode of transport, limiting my ability to schlep much stuff.  I think parking would be my biggest concern living in NYC, but it’s a welcome option over the bike or heels. Out here in the suburbs, just off the five lane beltway, I often find myself mixing business appointments across town with sporadic pit-stops of multi-tasking dry cleaners, grocery, and bank drive-through.  I easily drive 50 miles a day, so MY PEAPOD better come with a retractable 60′ extension cord out the trunk. Does the Peapod make me rethink my driving lifestyle, absolutely. Could I see myself in a “POD”?  Only with longer range, more horsepower and air-conditioning, for $12,500.00. It may be cute, with lots of clever tricks, but beyond SUN CITY, I don’t think the PEAPOD goes far enough to revolutionize the way we need to rethink our transportation habits. Thanks Mr. Arnell, for showing us how cute a GEM car can be with a new do. The real question is why isn’t Chrysler really putting some guts behind this project and delivering something really dynamic that makes us all want to own this next generation automobile. From the people that brought us the Mini-van and 12 cup-holders, we’ve come to expect more. See what great used cars you can buy for under $10k. CLICK HERE: —————————————————————————————-
