Tips on DMV NV when buying an out of state car .

The NV DMV extension letter DOES NOT APPLY to out of state purchases of any kind or in state private party purchases. Current wait times for DMV NV registration appointments are 2 months. DMV is only taking appointments through their ONLINE system. If you go to DMV and stand in the walk-up line, the staff will simply make an appointment for you.

BUYING A CAR FROM AN OUT OF STATE DEALER- : SALES TAX 101

You don’t beat the sales tax when you buy out of state. You either pay the state where you buy it, or you pay tax when you get it home.

Are you buying from a dealer, a broker or an individual/private party purchase? Different rules apply based on the seller and the state.  If your home is Nevada, purchasing  from California dealer, you have to determine if you are going to take delivery at the dealership in California or have it shipped to you?

Sales tax is collected by the dealership, in the contract or lease agreement.  When purchasing a car for cash out of state, the dealer must decide if they will collect the state sales tax or not. This is usually based on if the car is being driven home or shipped.

SALES TAX on CAR LEASES: OUT OF STATE

Lease agreements collect the sales tax monthly. Depending on the lessor, the dealer sends a check to the home state DMV. Sometimes the leasing bank pays the state monthly, as collected from your car payment. You want to know which bank and how it is handled, before you make the decision to purchase.

OUT OF STATE CAR AUTO LOANS:

On a finance contract: i.e. auto loan, the sales tax collected in the contract MUST be paid to the home state at the time of registration. In many cases the  dealer mails it directly to the local DMV office. Either way, the sales tax must be paid BEFORE or at the TIME you register the vehicle.

NEVADA DMV registration is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.  While your sales tax check sits on a desk for weeks before it gets processed into the system, you can’t register the car, OR EVEN DRIVE IT.

PAY THE TAX AT THE STATE OFFICE:  Nevada sales tax authorities are only working by appointment, so you will have to schedule an appointment if you want to pay the tax there. Nevada DMV will collect sales tax at the time of registration, if you are paying it yourself, or with a dealer check.

BUYING a car from A BROKER OUT of STATE:

Purchasing a car out of state through an auto broker, your sales tax requirement will be the same as that of a dealer. Dealers collecting sales tax for their state charge their rate.  When that rate is HIGHER than your home state, TOO BAD, you get no refund.  You or your auto broker/dealer can hire a NV DMV registration service to go to DMV for you. This will get you your plates faster and more efficiently. (See MYCarlady mobile DMV registration services).

BUYING a car FROM AN OUT OF STATE PRIVATE PARTY:

PRIVATE PARTY purchases out of state will be subject to sales tax UNLESS your state has a private party seller -buyer exemption. NEVADA does not charge sales tax on private party sales. Auction and lien sales are NOT private party and are sales tax required.
