General Motors has announced the future of OnStar will include more consumer-driven applications through a relationship with Google and other smart-phone suppliers.

GM is trying to improve its  “cool” factor by partnering the OnStar technology with the latest in wireless integration starring GOOGLE MAPS and MAPQUEST.

This latest effort is a direct challenge to the hotter Ford-Microsoft-driven SYNC system. GM is using the buzz of the Volt/Cruze to drive the youth message while Ford hones in with the Ford Fiesta, but offers the SYNC in all their models.

This latest attempt by GM to re-polish their stagnating image won’t put enough juice in a tired product line hanging on the hopes of the VOLT and CRUZE, however, for those interested in the two latest offerings, it’s an admirable effort to accept modern technology and the legal wrangling of hands-free, and texting while driving in today’s society. Here are the features of both systems (as of today) for your comparison;

SYNC:

[caption id="attachment_2680" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="SYNC 911 driver assist"][/caption] MUSIC: Play similar, voice command off Ipod, audio book support, find song. SAFETY: 911 assist, directions, route intervention and directions, vehicle health support, personalized information center. PHONE: Bluetooth capability, hands-free command, audible text conversion, multiple  address book interface, seamless conversation and ringtone variation.

ONSTAR:

MUSIC: Plays off the mp3 or Apple iPod. SAFETY: 911 assist, directions, route intervention and traffic alerts. Vehicle health support, personalized information center. Automatic door unlocking, starter interrupt and turn by turn directions. PHONE: Bluetooth capability, Droid, Blackberry and iPhone interface. Hands-free command,  Single  address book interface, seamless conversation.  What would have been really amazing is if GM had put a voice-activated mute command on the new CRUZE, for times like this… Could the new ONSTAR technology have recognized the voice command “SHUT-UP” over the din of this band? Now that would have been amazing.
