Here are some tips when considering a Private Party purchase. These are also valid points when buying from a dealership too.  If your seller won’t give this info up, DON’T BUY THE CAR! Something is fishy.

5 EASY STEPS to Buying a car from a Private Party.

  1. Take screenshots of the ad and all the correspondence, text messages and notes from phone calls regarding the sale.
  2. Get a picture of the sellers driver’s license and both sides of the TITLE before you pay. Contact your local DMV or registration service to be sure this is the most recent title, and not salvage.
  3. Run a CARFAX to see if the cars’ odometer matches the title and history. A few dollars spent on a report could save you thousands  $$$.private party used car purchase carfax
  4. Ask the seller to provide a recent SMOG or Emission test (within the last 30 days).  Satisfied with all these steps… make appt. for a test drive with a friend.
  5. When on the test drive both of you take a turn behind the wheel. Different drivers notice different things. Test the radio, heat and air-conditioning to be sure they work, then shut them off. Test drive on local roads and highways at faster speeds.
