Get ready for NV DMV to reopen June 15th

NV DMV lines

social distancing at Nevada DMV

Today the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced reopening plans for June 15th, next Monday. However, only for the most pressing of transactions, including those with physical challenges, or the military…. or individuals with the following:

Driver’s license suspension or revocation reinstatements

Original registration for private party and out-of-state vehicle sales

Vehicle movement permits

Everyone else is respectfully asked to do their transaction online, at a kiosk or stay away for the next 30 days.  The extension letter will still be good for 60-90 days, depending on the nature of your expired documents. SEE DMVNV.com for specifics.

NEW DMV Appointment APP allows for scheduling, soon.

WALK-ups only, for the first 30 days will be met by a DMV staffer with a QR code link.  So, please get your SMARTPHONE ready with a QR scanner app.  There is a new technology upgrade for walk-in clients. No longer will you have to wait all day if you didn’t have an appointment.  Meet “MOBILE TICKET”!

There’s a DMV NV APP for that!

“Mobile Ticket” allows customers to check in and join the line by using their cell phones to scan a QR code or entering a web address. Mobile Ticket will send text messages showing the customer where they stand in line. Now you can check-in at DMV, then go wait elsewhere, even away from the DMV,  with the ability to track the status of your appointed time to return.

BUT, don’t try downloading “MOBILE TICKET” from the APPLE or Play Store, it’s not there yet.   No specifics were discussed during the virtual press conference, on how the App will interact with appointments made online through the DMV website, account for no shows, cancellations, tardy arrivals, or multiple appointment hogs…

NV DMV Director Julie Butler and Field Services Manager Tonya Laney explained the new COVid re-opening plans include: NO WAITING in line or sitting in DMV for hours ( the chairs have been removed).  Any appointments previously scheduled have been cancelled.

Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles Attire includes a MUST for MASKS.

You are ASKED to MASK. The DMV staff will be covered in PPE, shielded behind plexiglass and seated every other station. Reduced employee capacity, as mandated in Phase 2 of the Nevada re-opening amidst COVid-19, is one of the reasons they are asking those of you with less pressing issues, to stay away  from DMV for now.

“NO NEED TO RUSH DOWN on MONDAY,” Ms. Butler insists, “You have time with the extension letter!”

Keep your 6′ social distance as you stand in line to be checked in by a PPE-garbed staffer. This person will NOT TAKE YOUR TEMPERATURE but will review your paperwork. You could be given a time slot, QRcode and told to return when the Mobile Ticket app tells you to. You could also be told  to GO HOME, if your paperwork is incorrect or your transaction is deemed NOT non-essential. The extension letters are still in effect.

EXTENSION DATES:

If your paperwork expired:  Prior to March 16th: do it as soon as possible. 9Late fees may apply).

March 16 – June 14th:  Extension is good ’til SEPTEMBER 13

June 15th- July 14th:  Extension is good til AUGUST 14th

July 15th or Later: You must renew on time.

CARRY THIS LETTER WITH YOU WHEN DRIVING WITH EXPIRED DOCUMENTS

DMV NV EXTENSION LETTER UPDATES NEW DATES

60 days from the expiration date of your paperwork or from June 15th, whichever comes first. “Please be courteous to our staff,” the director implored, “they have been doing a tremendous job readying the buildings and clearing some of the backlog.”

Nevada Driving EXAMS available, for some.

Getting a drive test during COVid 19.  NV DMV drive examiners will be clad in PPE smocks, face shields, gloves and masks. With a limited number of examiners available,  those with existing licenses and suspension issues will be addressed first.  Anxious teens will have to wait awhile longer. Citizens requiring driving exams are asked to clean i.e. sanitize, the inside of their vehicles as much as possible.  With summer temperature rising, please be kind to those examiners, wearing those outfits all day is going to add to an already stressful situation. Kudos to those folks.

Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles Inspection stations are open now.

If you need a vin inspection for the car you bought from out of state,  try mid-morning or late afternoon for shorter lines.  Get your car smogged if it’s over 2 years old.
