Nevada residents enjoy driving. Your license plate is good for 12 months, only. Nevada NRS 482.2o6 states:
1. Except as otherwise provided in this section, every motor vehicle, except for a motor vehicle that is registered pursuant to the provisions of NRS 706.801 to 706.861, inclusive, must be registered for a period of 12 consecutive months beginning the day after the first registration by the owner in this State.
Avoid late fees by using the NV DMV extension letter. However, this is NOT to balance your cash flow or earn interest. You will be charged for 12 mos. of registration from the actual due date. Furthermore, your tag will expire 12 months from when you were due to register, sans COVid. There is NO NO FREE RIDE on the DMV extension letter.
The State of NV needs the money… from our registrations!
The pandemic shutdown killed the state coffers. Tags and titles generate a steady income. Getting Nevada DMV open this Monday, June 15th, will help recoup some of those lost dollars. Waiting until the last day of the extension letter to register your car will NOT push your 2021 renewal back.
You pay for the use of the roads for 12 months, not 13 or 14… Decommissioned or UNDRIVABLE vehicles in-repair are the only exceptions to this rule. At the time of registration, you must have the NV DMV, NOTARIZED, non-operation form on said vehicle, with your paperwork. non-operation form.
No gaming the NV DMV extension system.
You will get a sticker for the month you actually register the vehicle. Nonetheless, DMV staff are manually recording the true due date of your registration into your “MyDMV” account: 30 days from the PURCHASE DATE on your BILL of SALE. So, your 2021 registration renewal is due on that date.
While our law enforcement officers may not know your tag is expired when they pull you over, a quick check of the plate could result in mayhem. Do not try to game the system as the result will be fines for expired registration, plate suspensions or worse. Pay the renewal fee when the card arrives, there are no FREE RIDES on the NV DMV extension letter.
OUT OF STATE VEHICLE PURCHASES
Bring your out of state temp tag into DMV if you bought a car from an out of state DEALERSHIP, if you believe you have more than 30 days to register in Nevada. Sometimes Arizona or Utah dealers give a 45 or 60 day temp. tag as a courtesy. This allows time for the paperwork to travel intra-state, dealer to NV DMV.
Dealer paperwork can take weeks to be appear at our local DMV offices. DMV will notify you when the paperwork arrives. This packet often includes sales tax and title. DO NOT go to DMV until you have that letter. However, you may register your out-of-state purchase by demonstrating the taxes have been paid on the contract OR paying the tax at time of registration. Private party car sales are not subject to sales tax in Nevada. You are required to have a perfected title, but you can sell an unregistered vehicle. As the buyer, be sure the vehicle passes smog/emissions before paying in full. Emission Exemptions are for vehicles over 20 years of age. A car bought from a private party can request a temporary movement permit for one 30 day period. You better register the car before the temp tag expires. If the permit expires and you failed to register the car, you will need a Non-operation form or pay the fine! Best practices: Ask the current owner to smog the car before the sale!
