Tips on NV DMV and OUT OF STATE Car Purchases

Part 2.

Driving your out of state purchase home:

California does NOT give temporary permits for vehicles shipped out of state.  If you decide to DRIVE the car home from California, you get a 1 way trip permit. After which you are on your own to get a temp tag from DMV.  Arizona and Utah do give temp tags good for 30-45 and 90 days, depending on the state.

WHEN YOU GET YOUR OUT OF STATE CAR HOME:

Once home to Nevada you are required to have the VIN inspection. This is done by a DMV inspector at the little hut outside DMV or by local law enforcement. If the car is over 2 years old, you will also need an emissions or smog test.  Nevada insurance is also required at the time of registration.  Have all your documents ready, including the contract and proof or sales tax having been paid. Otherwise, you will pay the sales tax at the time of registration…. or no registration. AKA;WASTED TRIP.

OUT OF STATE LICENSE PLATES on your out of state car purchase.

In California the plates go with the car, however, those plates are not legal for you to use unless your dealer registered the car to you in California. The plates and registration must be turned in to the NV DMV at the time of registration in your home state.  It is ILLEGAL for you to drive on the unexpired CALIFORNIA plate without registration in your name. If you get pulled over, police can impound your car.

Arizona plates registered to you are legal to drive on but must be turned in when you move to Nevada. Same for any other state you move from with the car legally registered to you.

PRIVATE PARTY SELLERS should remove their plates at the time of sale. They then go online to the state DMV website and surrender them BEFORE cancelling the car insurance on that vehicle.

CANCELLING YOUR LICENSE PLATE FIRST!   Tips on NV DMV and OUT OF STATE Car Purchases

Cancel your license plate BEFORE cancelling the INSURANCE. This is a HUGE issue in NEVADA  with DMV. If you cancel your car insurance BEFORE surrendering the plate online at www.dmvnv.com. The DMV in Nevada calls it surrendering your registration, but really it is freezing the plate and credit so you can use it on another car, without a penalty.  here’s my tip on NV DMV:  If you cancel the insurance and do not surrender the plate, you will lose the use of the plate and the remaining CREDIT.  Here is the link: https://dmvnv.com/platesurrender.htm

This is where it will take you…  have your plate info an drivers license ready. This is 15 min. of your life you won’t get back… but i’ts worth it.
