Teen Driver Licenses on Hold-Tips for Practice Driving.

However, this is a great time to hone some driving experience your teen driver won’t get from a online class, Youtube tutorial or driving school session.  Simulators are great if your city has one available at a reasonable cost, but, there is nothing better than practice in the real car, real time.

MyCarlady’s WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR TEEN DRIVER DURING COVid.

This is the first in a series of activities you can do with your newbie driver to help them build their confidence and practical knowledge behind the wheel. These tips will also come in handy when you need him/her to “help you out” in a transportation pinch. You doing this with them will build your trust in their comfort and ability to “THINK” when behind the wheel.

PRACTICE DRIVES for teen drivers.

  1. Grab a paper map and plan a trip from home to the airport.
  2. Create directions in a turn by turn fashion. Try to limit the turns to right-hand turns as often as possible. Right-hand turns are 75% safer for new drivers.
  3. Plan a stop at the departure section and pick a frequently used airline.  Allow your teen driver to experience the chaos and flow of airport traffic.
  4. Exit and return, taking a pass through the passenger pick-up area. Explain the “NO LOITERING” policy most airport pick-up areas have.
  5. Find the “CELLPHONE” lot. Once again exit the airport and navigate to the waiting area, i.e. cellphone lot.
  6. Allow your teen driver to navigate his way out of the waiting lot or long-term/short term parking area back tot he passenger pick-up curb.

TUNNELS and TEEN DRIVERS

Many airports have tunnels connecting highways and city streets to the flight-paths. Spend some quality time during off-peak (COVid is a good time) entering and exiting the tunnels from various directions.  Remember, lights on and no lane changes in the tunnel.

Driving Schools don’t teach this stuff.

This is a great lesson plan for teaching your teen driver important driving life skills. Doing this once during the day, then again at night, will be valuable tools for your teen driver.
