The PT Cruiser arrived on the Las Vegas scene in 2001 and I sold a ton of them, thanks to a great safety rating, in part due to the shape and design, ie: a retro look that created a new trend in auto design harking back to the muscle car era of American automotive excellence.
In my tenure of selling new and used PT Cruisers, the many times a crashed one arrived on my door step, the car may have totaled out, but the driver and passengers walked away with barely a scratch. The owners always returned for another PT Cruiser, amazed at how safe this little car was.
One client hit a wild burro, head-on, the flying equine rolled over the car on a back-flip, slid down the lift-gate and trotted away after shaking off the full body roll-over. The car was covered in burro, but neither one was totalled and the PT had to replace the hood.
RECALLS and CAMPAIGNS for the PT CRUISER:
The biggest thing I want to warn you about when it comes to the PT is not so much a recall as a hazard. The prop rod under the hood is painted bright yellow for a reason. SO MANY folks have propped the hood, and then forgetting about the tiny rod, slammed the hood down (thinking it was a strut) punched a hole in the hood, costing thousands to repair or replace.
The other item to note is the battery: It is located up under the front fender, a place you CAN NOT see! The contacts for jumping a pT are in the front, a bolt and contact charge clamp. It works fine but if you have to replace the battery, it’s from under the car.
